Correct mapping can also help minimise the risk of any mistakes during the actual lip tattooing process.

What Is Permanent Makeup Colour Theory?

Mastering PMU colour theory means being familiar with the general rules of interaction between different pigment shades, their behavior in the skin, and different Fitzpatrick types, skin tones and undertones.

To predict what a pigment shade will look like healed, we need to know the properties of the formula, and assess those of the skin: its type and melanin content, undertone, thickness, the degree of blood supply, skin, overall state, age.

Skin type is easily determined according to the 6-degree Fitzpatrick scale.

Understanding permanent makeup colour theory is vital for us PMU artists, as colour and pigment selection can be one of the most difficult aspects to get right in permanent makeup.

While traditional makeup sits on top of the skin, permanent makeup is implanted underneath it - so healed results are essentially the colour of the pigment as seen through the filter of your client’s skin colour, and are affected by both their value and undertones.

At Shadesink we will go through the differences of Lip colour pigments next to your skin and see how it settles after a few minutes if it looks more blue toned or darker etc.
